Reef Song Listening

Video installation, 4:32 minutes

Reef Song Listening merges art and science, immersing audiences in the soundscapes of the Great Barrier Reef. The piece combines underwater sound recordings by Dr. Miles Parsons with video footage by artist Nadine Schmoll, offering a unique perspective of coral reefs. This immersive experience reveals the vibrant, yet fragile, life within the reef and highlights the interconnectedness of marine species. The work also serves as a reminder of the coral reef ecosystems' vital role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting marine life.

Schmoll hopes to foster a deeper connection to nature, encourage reflection on the wonders of the natural world, and inspire action towards sustainability. It aims to raise awareness about marine bioacoustics and its potential to help address climate change impacts on coral reefs. Through this collaboration between art and science, the project seeks to inspire new ways of engaging with conservation efforts, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and encourage individual behavioral changes for a more sustainable future.

Nadine Schmoll is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. Her work explores human, plant, and animal interconnections, focusing on the Great Barrier Reef. With over 12 years in education, Nadine blends art and science to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
