Animating Interconnection / Hannah Gelderman

Hannah Gelderman
Canada

Gelderman’s three hand-cut collage stop-motion animations explore the deep interconnection between our bodies and the natural world. These pieces invite viewers to reflect on how they are cared for and connected to the ecosystems around them. Through these animations, she emphasizes the importance of feeling connected to the environment as a catalyst for climate action and regeneration. Gelderman envisions a world where everyone has access to clean air, water, and nature, underscoring the critical need for environmental justice and protection.

These works highlight the importance of ecosystem preservation and personal connection to the earth. They address the systemic inequalities that prevent equitable access to nature and vital resources. By invoking themes of climate justice, mental health, and human connections to nature, Gelderman’s art becomes a tool for reflection and action in the face of the ongoing climate crisis. Her art is an invitation to reflect on one’s own relationships with nature and consider the changes necessary for a just and sustainable future.
