Glass Bottles, Fragrant Materials, Compost

Liebman’s work centers on community composting in response to funding cuts to this programming in NYC. She uses glass bottles filled with fragrant compost samples from the 5 boroughs of NYC to symbolize the transformation of food scraps into vital resources. By integrating the luxurious element of perfume with the humble process of composting, she underscores the importance of community-driven composting programs, which not only help reduce waste but also create enriched environments for neighborhoods through sustainable practices.

Liebman aims to advocate for the continuation and expansion of community composting programs. Her work highlights how this composting fosters collaboration between neighbors, park workers, horticulturists, and microorganisms, all working together to enrich communities and create a more sustainable future. It challenges conventional ideas of luxury by promoting sustainability, community building, and environmental justice.

Tessa Liebman is a New York-based artist and professional chef whose multidisciplinary practice explores the intersection of senses, art, and social issues. She draws from her culinary background to translate stories and sensory experiences into art, particularly focusing on themes of sustainability, community, and being in the present moment.
